Inaugural Business Event Attracts Transatlantic Audience of More Than 240

Houston

A transatlantic audience of more than 240 delegates took part in an exciting new business event on Tuesday, March 19th – and plans are already in the pipeline to repeat the successful venture.

Hosted by Aberdeen-based Granite PR, the inaugural Aberdeen-Houston Gateway offered a platform for knowledge sharing and networking across the Atlantic. It is also hoped that the event will act as a springboard to further strengthen the links between the two energy hubs as well as facilitating additional opportunities between businesses in both cities.

The event took the form of a lunch at Aberdeen’s Marcliffe Hotel and Spa where 180 attendees benefited from a live link to 65 people attending a breakfast at the Hotel Granduca in Houston.

Granite PR managing director Brett Jackson welcomed an impressive line-up of speakers led by Rod Christie, CEO and VP for the Subsea Systems business at GE Oil & Gas. Also taking part were Tom Smith of ACSEF, Gordon McIntosh of Aberdeen City Council, Stephen Costello of the Houston Mayor’s Office, Her Majesty’s Consul General in Houston Andrew Millar, Lynn Houston of United Airlines, Lily Lord of Lufthansa, Jim Nixon of Varel International and Ian Kirk of Downhole Products.

Speakers, panellists, hosts and questions from delegates in both venues saw discussions focused on the depth and breadth of the many existing bonds and parallels between the two leading energy centres, and looked at how links can be further enhanced on various levels. Each city’s strengths and the opportunities ready to be explored in both locations were also to the fore, as was the importance of engaging with education at all levels to attract new people into the industry and demonstrate the career-long possibilities which still exist in the oil and gas industry. The need to stay ahead of the game in the development of new products and services was another subject which fell under the spotlight, as were the opportunities which exist due to the advent of unconventional drilling in the U.S. Commenting on the success of the event, Granite PR founder and managing director Brett Jackson said: “The purpose of the Aberdeen-Houston Gateway was to review the past, present and future of business links between the cities and to explore the huge potential which still exists in the well known and long served business and cultural connections.”

“We believe this event has the momentum to become an annual event. We also have considerable interest in replicating this successful model for other global energy hubs.”

The Aberdeen-Houston Gateway was sponsored by Downhole Products, Varel International, Galleria Virtual Office Solutions, United Airlines, the Energy Institute, GE Oil & Gas, the British School of Houston, Harris Caprock, Greenspoint, Extreme Business Solutions, IT-Worx, Lighthouse, Skills at Work, UTEC, ThinJack, Centrifuges Un-Limited, PKF Texas, BoyarMiller, Advancial, Katy Area Economic Development Council, Hampco, Hotel Granduca, Marcliffe Hotel & Spa, BABC Houston, TradeMark Insurance Services, Technosphere, Aberdeen PA, Business Plus Scotland, Caber Coffee and Skene House.
