International Event Celebrates Transatlanic Business Links
An international event celebrating the business links between Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Houston has once again been hailed as a resounding success.
The fourth annual Aberdeen-Houston Gateway attracted an exciting line-up of speakers, contributors and visitors from both sides of the Atlantic including a delegation of Houston business representatives led by the British Consul General in Houston, Karen Bell
Thanks to a series of meetings, tours and networking events, the Aberdeen-Houston Gateway gave participants the opportunity to explore potential opportunities and further strengthen links between the global energy hubs. The event was created by Granite PR and managed by Business Plus Scotland with a key highlight of the busy week being the flagship lunch at Macdonald Norwood Hall when delegates heard from a variety of businesses with experience in both the UK and U.S. markets.
Amongst those presenting at the Aberdeen lunch were Paradigm Flow Services who also welcomed the Houston visitors to their global headquarters at Drumoak, Aberdeenshire. The company is a market leader in the development of ground-breaking, field proven technology for the energy industry and showcased some of its latest advancements. The visit followed hot on the heels of a series of “tech day” during which around 100 visitors visited the purpose-built test facilities to see demonstrations of equipment such as the patented Flexi-Coil subsea intervention technology.
Commenting on the Aberdeen-Houston Gateway, Karen Bell said: Paradigm Flow Services’ Commercial Director Donald Ballantyne said: “The Americas and Gulf of Mexico is a key strategic target for Paradigm’s continued success and future expansion.
Being the global energy hub, Houston is the natural location to continue building our resources and networks. Events like the Aberdeen-Houston Gateway are important to help forge new relationships and the right connections that will support our business activities and growth.”
Aberdeen-Houston Gateway creator and Granite PR founder and managing director Brett Jackson added: “We are delighted that so many people gave their support to this exciting event which has provided an excellent opportunity to expand corporate horizons on both sides of the Atlantic. Current operating conditions mean that it has never been more important to look at diversifying and adding value and we hope that the Aberdeen-Houston Gateway will provide an important springboard from which people can grow their own businesses.”

Background to Aberdeen-Houston Gateway
The Aberdeen-Houston Gateway was founded by Brett Jackson in 2013 with the objective of building on the long-standing good relationships between Aberdeen and Houston over the past 40 years, and to facilitate networking and knowledge sharing between senior executives of businesses and organisations at both locations, leading ultimately to increased opportunities for businesses at both locations.
The event is timed to take place prior to OTC in Houston, which many companies attend from Aberdeen.
The first 2 events in 2013 and 2014 took the form of a lunch with live link to a breakfast in Houston.
This year the Gateway is a one-week initiative and we will host an incoming delegation of 13 business people from Houston for a programme of visits and activities, the 4 themes being Oil and Gas, Health, Education and Professional Services, all of which are significant industry sectors for both Aberdeen and Houston.
The official programme will include visits to local companies, organisations and individuals, a civic dinner, morning coffee with H.M. Consul to Houston, Andrew Millar, a visit to the Institute of Medical Sciences at Aberdeen University and a breakfast and visited hosted by RGU as well as the Annual Aberdeen-Houston Gateway lunch.
The Annual Aberdeen-Houston Gateway lunch will take place on Wednesday 18th March at Norwood Hall Hotel.

Third Annual Event Hailed As Resounding Success
A major business event exploring the links and opportunities between two of the world’s leading energy has taken place in Having evolved from a single, half-day event to a week-long series, the third annual Aberdeen-Houston Gateway featured business and educational visits, networking opportunities, and knowledge sharing platforms.
The highlight of the week was a flagship lunch at the city’s Norwood Hall Hotel where a packed house of 200 delegates heard from a line-up of leading speakers from both sides of the Atlantic, including some of the 14 Houston business representatives who have made the trip to Aberdeen for the week.
They were led by Her Majesty’s Consul General in the region Andrew Millar who said: "Houston is a great environment for setting up business: Texas has a wide and diverse economy and is home to the global oil and gas capital."
"The cyclical nature of the sector is well known and while we are in a downturn, opportunities still exist for UK companies. The fast, the smart and the creative will do well in this environment and I am convinced of the strength and innovation capacity of firms from the UK and especially Aberdeen and the North East."
During his time in Aberdeen, Mr Millar also visited leading electrical products and services provider AEL who will celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of their Houston office during this year’s OTC. Supported by Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International the Houston base – which has created four jobs – has allowed the family-run enterprise greater co- ordination and stronger, direct communication with the North American market.
Mr Millar added: “AEL is another great example of a well-established Aberdeen company which is capitalising on the business links and synergies which exist between its home city and fellow global energy industry hub, Houston. Many organisations are reaping the rewards of exploring these opportunities and the Aberdeen-Houston Gateway is an excellent tool for those wishing to find out more about setting up or growing their presence in these key locations."
AEL Operations Director Alan Mackie said: "The success of AEL (Americas) Inc. is testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone in the team, both in Houston and elsewhere. We were delighted to share our experiences with Andrew Millar during his visit "We are confident in the good relationships we have forged with carefully selected global manufacturers who are leaders in their respective fields and we believe this represents a synergistic approach in growing our business and helping our customers to do the same." Reflecting on the success of the third annual Aberdeen-Houston Gateway, event creator and host Brett Jackson of Granite PR added: "Despite the current challenges of the lower oil price, companies in both locations continue to look for and benefit from opportunities to work together. The Gateway exists to facilitate such collaborations and we are delighted that so many business sectors are represented this week."
